Funeral Directors play an important role in the eye donation process and can help honor the wishes of those who want to give the beautiful gift of sight to New Yorkers in need. They can also provide information about eye donation and donor registration when helping individuals and families make end-of-life decisions or conduct advanced planning.

Eye-Bank Senior Hospital and Community Liaison Amanda Vesey-Askey Speaking at a Continuing Vision Seminar
The Eye-Bank recently produced a virtual education module that provides specialized guidance to Funeral Directors about their role in the eye donation process. It explains the important relationship between eye banks and funeral homes and answers frequently asked questions about eye donation. The module also includes a testimonial from area Funeral Director and cornea transplant recipient James Donofrio who shares his personal connection to eye donation and its importance in the funeral home profession. The educational module can be accessed HERE.
Advance planning is a good time to consider eye donation
The decision to be an eye donor is a very important one, as there are many New Yorkers who suffer from blinding eye diseases that can only be treated with a healthy donor cornea. The Eye-Bank values its long-standing partnership with area funeral homes. We are grateful to the dedicated professionals who help with advance planning as well as support grieving families by assisting the eye donation process. They help to ensure that every individual’s wish to donate is honored.
